$40,000 will buy a well-optioned Mazda 3, right?

Stay away from people who have nothing to lose.
OTOH, someone in a POS worth nothing can probably less afford to lose it than some with a new car and lots of insurance.

I like it when people try to fight the Montero...

In my $1200 POS I would be the only one to die. I am sure their beige CUV will keep them safe.

The joys of driving a 23 year vehicle with obvious battle scars. It comes in handy when people are lane straddling or doing that MADDENING thing where they come back into the traffic lane from a left turn lane because they somehow need more room to make a left turn [ *@#$@#$!!}] . I get right up to their mirrors to help them understand the difference in price between a piece of glass mirror and a mirror with blind spot monitoring, heating and cameras.
Even if they just go
“whoa! that asshole nearly took my mirror off!” it should scare them into being a little more aware of their surroundings in the future hopefully.

Reminds me of when a shiny new Jag F-Pace tried to cut off my wife by passing us on the shoulder in stop-and go traffic at SeaTac. She rolled down her window when the Jag started to stick his nose in right at the non-existent gap in front of us.
“YOU WANNA TRY, HUH? I DON’T GIVE A FUCK IF YOU HIT ME, YOU’RE REALLY GONNA LET YOUR FANCY CAR GET HURT? HUH? HUH?!?!?”
The driver stopped cold and sulked in her seat.
“DIDN’T THINK SO!”
Makes me smile. Though I told her I don’t want to get shot in the future, but the driver looked like Posh Spice, so my wife saw fresh entitled meat.

Leased cars may create this, too. More than once I’ve said to myself “it’s a lease, bring it on”.

I don’t doubt it, but there are a lot of reasons to drive old cars, and if you are doing it because it’s the cheapest option (which is often the case), there’s a good chance you are carrying the minimum insurance allowed in your state (and maybe not even that), because that is also the cheapest option.

I don’t doubt it. I suspect you’re kind of exceptional.
Either way, no one wins with road rage.

I agree with her sentiment, but getting severely injured and medical bills always make me pause for caution.

Most people have the bare minimum ins, because they can’t afford proper insurance + their $400 -600/month car payment. I’d rather spend a few dollars more a month to know my vehicles are covered if something happens, I can afford an extra $10-20/month, but scrounging $1k when something happens isn’t really on the table.
I agree though, no one wins, but sometimes it would make me feel a lot better.

Beware of the damaged car driving recklessly. Chances are they don’t give a shit.

I drive old cars because they’re cheap, I insure them well because replacing them isn’t. $10-20 extra a month for good insurance is far easier to afford than $1-2k if one gets wrecked.

That’s the difference. You care about your cars more than someone who grabbed what they could afford off a buy here pay here lot. I’d do the same.

Yeah I had a total douche canoe in a new BMW 4 door, 7 series sleeker looking 4 door, sorry I don’t really pay attention to them, with a bunch of friends in it. They were tailgating in SF in the rain LOL, I would just block them as they frantically tried to intimidate me in m y DD 2006 CRV, I was like go ahead mofo, you in such a hurry to impress your friends, let’s dance! Then they did that shit in the golden gate bridge. I love it when those people get out of the lane you know is always better and then they try to get back a few seconds later and you block them.

My wife gets mad at me for educating the public. But if you don’t teach there is no chance anyone will learn. I’m sure most are total as s h ats and won’t care but I keep trying. If t hey want to fuck up their fancy car while I commute in my CRV, let’s do this.
